# The image of Belgium

Belgium had been a neutral country since 1831, but on August 4th 1914, this neutrality and its underlying principles are violated by Germany. Quite quickly, Belgium comes to light as a very special case in this early part of the conflict, being in fact the only country whose territory was more than 90% invaded. This Belgian peculiarity ensures the thoroughly unusual nature of all of its relations with the world at large.
