A crew from US Air Force Reserve’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (53rd WRS ), also known as “The Hurricane Hunters,” captured aerial footage of Hurricane Florence as the storm was making its way towards the US East Coast on Wednesday, September 13. The 53rd WRS is the only Defense Department unit that flies reconnaissance missions into severe tropical weather during the hurricane season. The crew was flying a mission to collect data for the US National Hurricane Center to assist in providing up-to-date and accurate information for storm forecasts. The footage in this video includes cockpit vires of the crew taking off from the Savanah Air National Guard Base, in Georgia, GoPro views from the hurricane’s eye and views of the eyewall.
