STORYLINE:

Police in full riot gear cleared a blockade Thursday as authorities prepared to move in and remove tree houses built by activists in an ancient forest in western Germany that was slated to be cleared next month to allow for coal strip mining.

Hundreds of police were on hand with water cannon trucks and heavy machinery as preparations began to remove the treehouses occupied by environmentalists trying to stop the logging in the 12,000-year-old forest near the town of Kerpen, southwest of Cologne.

Police used megaphones early in the morning to warn activists to leave some 60 cobbled-together dwellings in the forest canopy, including platforms built on tall wooden tripods, or face being forcibly removed.

It was not immediately clear how many protesters occupied the tree houses.

Activists rejected as "ridiculous" local authorities' contention the homes constituted a fire hazard.
