A powerful bomb detonated on the grounds of private Athens TV station Skai in the early hours of Monday morning causing extensive damage to the building. No injuries were reported after the blast which happened at around 2.40 am. According to media reports, an anonymous phone call was placed to two other media outlets at approximately 2.00 am. with a warning that a bomb would go off at the Skai building within 45 minutes. All staff evacuated the building and police rushed to secure the area before the bomb went off.

Skai is one of Greece’s largest TV stations and is affiliated with the daily newspaper Kathimerini. The newspaper says on its website that the explosive device was placed in a backpack that was left on the sidewalk outside the Skai office. Skai’s crime correspondent is quoted as saying that the device is estimated to have contained five kilos of explosives. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack which is being condemned by Greek politicians as “an attack against democracy.”

The first of these videos shows the moment of the explosion while the second has various shots of damage to the office building and forensic detectives working near the building.
